Uma água de coco, por favor!: Ordering drinks in Brazil



Coco

To show you have mastered a language, sometimes it’s not enough to order food and drink, you have to know how to do it, the little quirks that will land you just what you want. Here are some sentences that will prove to all around you’re a not only a pro Portuguese speaker, but also a knowledgeable foodie, or gourmet, as it’s said in Brazil.

Here is a list of sentences that will assist you in getting there.

Suco

Sucos are juices, usually squeezed from natural fruit that never come with ice, not even on the hottest summer day! The thought is that if you add ice or “water” to it, you’re subtracting nature.

Eu quero um suco de laranja.
I want an orange juice.

Me dá uma limonada, por favor.
Give me a lemonade, please.

Eu gostaria de uma limonada suiça.
I’d like a Swiss lemonade (made with limes in a blender).

Vocês têm suco de maracuja?
Do you have passion-fruit juice?

Refrigerantes are soft drinks, and colas; Unless you’re at an American fast-food place, they will only come with ice if you ask.

Eu quero uma garrafa de Coca.
I want a bottle of Coke (at a restaurant or bar you’ll get the small bottle).

Você tem Sprite em latinha?
Do you have a can of Sprite?

Esse refrigerante está quente, dá para colocar um pouco de gelo?
This soft drink is warm, can you put some ice in it?

Bebidas, include mostly alcoholic beverages. The Portuguese for cocktail is coquetel, so that’s easy to understand, but people usually only drink it at high end bars and clubs.

The number one drink in Brazil is cerveja, beer, and it has to be extremely cold.

Chope sem colarinho

Me dá uma loira, estupidamente gelada, por favor. Give me a blonde (pilsner beer), stupidly cold (literally).

Eu quero um chope, sem colarinho.
I want a draft beer, no head.

Eu gostaria de um chope com colarinho.
I’d like a draft beer with head.

Vocês servem cerveja preta?
Do you serve dark beer?

The other all time favorite is caipirinha, an internationally renowned cocktail. When it is blended and includes fruit other than limes it is known as batida (blended).

Me da uma caipirinha mexida.
Give me a stirred caipirinha.

Eu quero uma caipirinha coada.
I want a strained caipirinha.

Por favor, uma batida de coco.
I’d like a coconut blended caipirinha.

Nós queremos uma batida de maracuja e uma de abacaxi.
We want a passion fruit and a pineapple batida.
