Today, Flag Day is celebrated to commemorate the adoption of the U.S. flag on June 14, 1777.
Italy has its own Flag Day on April 25 (“il 25 aprile” as the holiday is called): the day in which US and Allied troops entered Milan, thus liberating Italy from Fascism. The flag is seen everywhere that day. The Italian flag - known as “Il Tricolore” - was created in Reggio Emilia in 1797 to commemorate the Cispadane Republic and has three colours: green (verde), white (bianco), and red (rosso). The story goes that the creators wanted to use blue instead of green (like the French flag), but there was no blue fabric available in the market in front of the Sala Tricolore, so they had to go with green.
