Ari Learns Spanish: Familiarity

Living Language Note: Over the next few months, our new friend Ari will learning Spanish and sharing her journey on the blog! When she’s not reading her Living Language books & playing games on her Living Language app, Ari is a Program Planner at Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research in Boston, Massachusetts. Make sure to leave a comment & say hello in the language you’re learning.

It’s been a busy, busy two weeks!

Between general holiday craziness, and being out of town on a work trip for a week and a half, I have been hard pressed in the last two weeks to keep to my goal of completing at least one Spanish lesson each week.

Luckily for me, I was able pull up my old high school Spanish to move through the first two lessons fairly quickly.

Lesson one served as a helpful review for me of some generally useful phrases and forms of greeting, the difference between the formal and informal versions of “you,” and some basic conversation starters, most of which (I am happy to report) I remembered without too much difficulty.

Lesson two proved slightly more challenging, as I worked to remember the vocabulary for family members, something I remember having trouble with even when I was younger (sobrino, hijo, primo, nieto??) But I found the flashcards useful, and enjoyed the games. I’m still mostly in the realm of familiarity, and at the end of the two lessons, I am feeling fairly confident with my ability to remember the words and phrases and use them in conversation.

I realize that I probably won’t have it so easy in the next few lessons, but I’m looking forward to digging in. I am finding it very useful to review all the basics again, even as I am learning new words and phrases (hable más despacio, por favor!)

More to come soon, and in the meantime, ¡Felices Fiestas!
