From October [ottobre] to December [dicembre] is truffle season in Italy — but the peak of the season is November [novembre]. Whether you like it or not, truffle [tartufo] is, in some areas of Italy, a sort of underground (pun intended) religion. The regions [regioni] where tartufi are found are: Umbria, Piemonte, Toscana, and Marche.
There are various types of truffles, some considered the most valuable (and, of course, command higher prices) than others. Truffles are overall very very expensive because of their very limited quantities and because finding them is reltively difficult — you need, among the others, a special and [cane]. There is an actually a truffle exchange (like a stock exchange) …check the this week’s prices. And you thought that gold was expensive…
