The only nominados españoles (Spanish nominees) in los Oscars this year are the brothers Pedro Almodóvar and Agustín Almodóvar. Their producing company, El Deseo, co-produced the Argentinian film Relatos salvajes (Wild Tales), which is nominated in the category of foreign language film (película de habla no inglesa).
Below is a trailer with subtítulos en ingles (English subtitles) for Relatos salvajes. I haven’t seen it yet, but as they say, “tiene buena pinta” (it looks good).
If you’re interested in practicing your Spanish while catching up on your Oscar winners, here’s a list of the only 5 Spanish films that have won the prestigious award in the past:
1972, El discreto encanto de la burguesía, Luis Buñuel
1982, Volver a empezar (Begin the Beguine), José Luis Garci
1992, Belle Époque, Fernando Trueba
1999, Todo sobre mi madre (All about my Mother), Pedro Almodóvar
2002, Mar adentro (The Sea Inside), Alejandro Amenábar
Also, only two Spanish actors have won the Oscar. First, in 2007, Javier Bardem won it in the category of Actor protagonista (Actor in a leading role) for No es país para viejos (No Country for Old Men) directed by the Cohen brothers; and one year later, in 2008, Penélope Cruz won the Oscar as Mejor actriz de reparto (Best supporting actress) for Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona directed by Woody Allen. Bardem and Cruz with Antonio Banderas are Spain’s biggest film stars thanks, no doubt, to their careers in the United States. To finish, a little gossip (cotilleo): Bardem and Cruz married some years ago, while Banderas divorced his wife, Melanie Griffith this past year.
