El otoño (Fall) is already here and the weather is changing. Let´s review basic expressions to be able to talk about el tiempo (the weather) in this beautiful season. Most of the expressions use the verb hace. This can be confusing, since in English we use the verb to be for the same expressions. The only way to acquire it is practice, practice, practice.
EXPRESSIONS WITH HACE
Hace fresco. It’s chilly.
Hace un poco de frío. It’s a bit cold.
No hace tanto frío. It’s not that cold.
Hace viento. It’s windy.
EXPRESSIONS WITH ESTÁ
Está nublado. It´s cloudy.
However, in Latin America and in the U. S. you will often hear the expressions in the previous section with está instead of hace:
Está fresco. It´s chilly.
Está un poco frío. It´s a bit cold.
No está tan frío. It´s not that cold.
EXPRESSIONS ABOUT LA LLUVIA (the rain)
Va a llover. It´s going to rain.
Está lloviendo. It´s raining.
Llueve. It rains.
Coge el paraguas. Take your umbrella.
No tengo botas de agua. I don’t have rain boots (lit., water boots).
No necesitas un chubasquero/impermeable. You don’t need a raincoat.
MAKING PREDICTIONS
Las temperaturas van a bajar. The temperatures are going to drop.
Este invierno va a hacer mucho frío. This winter is going to be very cold.
Finally, let’s make sure we wear a light jacket (llevar una chaqueta ligera) and a scarf (un pañuelo para el cuello), and let’s put away our flip flops (guardar las chanclas) until the Spring.
