Types of Restaurants You’ll Find in Brazil

Brazil’s Mani, a restaurant located in São Paulo, was recently awarded one of the 50 best restaurants in the world. It is an honor not only to be on the list, but also to be one of only two establishments run by a woman chef. Parabéns, Brasil! Congratulations, Brazil!

Brazilian cuisine is as varied as the number of immigrants it has embraced throughout its more than 500 years of history, and to go with this diversity, there are many different types of restaurants:

Restaurante internacional ou gastronômico, international or gastronomic restaurant, is an establishment que oferece cozinha do mundo todo, which offers cuisine from all over the world e tem chef renomado, and has a renowned chef. To be classified as típico, a restaurant must have characteristic decoration and offer the traditional food of the country or region: restaurante típico baiano ou restaurante típico chines, typical Bahian or Chines restaurants.

Restaurante por quilo, by the kilo restaurants, are simple places that usually cater to workers. The main characteristics of these establishments are o método self-service e mesa buffet, the self-serve method and a cafeteria-style counter. Restaurante rodízio, is an all-you-can-eat type of restaurant in which waiters bring a variety of food to each person at the table. Remember that in these restaurants you pay a fixed price for the food, but that usually excludes bebidas, beverages and sobremesa, dessert.

Churrasco

Pizzaria, pizzeria, servem pizzas, calzones e outros pratos italianos, serve pizza, calzone and other Italian dishes. Usually, Brazilians will have a chop, draft beer with their pizzas.

Restaurante auto-estrada, is any variety of restaurant by the side of roads or highways. In these, sometimes surprisingly big eateries, you’ll find comida típica, lanches rápidos, doces, bolachas e bebidas, regional cuisine, quick snacks, sweets, cookies and beverages. You will also find lembranças locais, local souvenirs, brinquedos, toys, bathroom facilities and playgrounds. A peculiar feature of these places is that you are given uma ficha de consumo, a consumption slip, on which everything you buy in the different departments is written down and then tallied at the checkout when you leave. Be aware that if you lose the slip, you’ll be charged for a set amount, usually much higher than you’d normally spend, so cuidado! Não perca a ficha! Be careful! Don’t’ lose your slip!

Lanchonetes, snack bars are places to eat sanduíches, lanches, sopas e saladas, sandwiches, snacks, soups and salads. These usually have a central counter where the food is prepared.

Padaria in Rio de Janeiro

Padarias, bakeries can be found on virtually every corner and here you can eat, lanches, snacks, salgadinhos, types of savory pastries, paēs, breads, doces, sweets, and sorvetes, ice-cream. Padarias are very convivial places, where people stand around the main counter and order cafezinho, the small Brazilian coffee, cerveja, beer, sucos, juices e refrigerantes, and soft-drinks.
