To celebrate the upcoming release of Living Language’s online Irish course, each day this week, we’ll post the truth about a common myth or misconception about the Irish language:
Misconception #5: What’s the point of learning Irish? Everyone in Ireland speaks English as well.
Learning Irish is more than just learning to communicate with Irish speakers (although that is a great way to make a connection). It’s also a way to get a deeper understanding and appreciation for Irish culture and history. For example, in Essential Irish, you’ll learn that Irish greetings have been shaped by the importance of Catholicism in Irish heritage. Another way you’ll get insight into Irish culture through the language is in its proverbs. Do you know how to wish an Irish speaker good luck? You’ll learn this too in Advanced Irish:
Go n-éirí an bóthar leat
Good luck. [lit., May the road rise with you.])
