Learn about the Irish language: Day 3

To celebrate the upcoming release of Living Language’s online Irish course, each day this week, we’ll post the truth about a common myth or misconception about the Irish language:

Misconception #3: What’s so special about Irish?

Irish is a unique and beautiful language with a rich and ancient tradition of legends, poetry and folklore. In fact, Irish possesses the oldest vernacular narrative literature in Northern Europe.

The Irish language is also unique in its word order. Here’s an interesting fact you may not know. In Irish statements, the verb comes first (unlike English, of course, in which the verb comes after the subject.) Take a look at this simple sentence to see an example:

I am well.
Tá mé go maith.
[taw may gu mah.]

The verb (a form of to be) comes first, as you can see.
