Did you watch the Super Bowl yesterday? Even if you didn’t, you may have heard about the ad Coca Cola aired that feature the song “America The Beautiful” sung in several languages. You can imagine the excitement this brought out in the language nerds here at Living Language!
If you saw it, were you able to differentiate the languages other than English? Answers follow the video below…

Apparently, according to the behind-the-scenes footage Coca-Cola posted on YouTube, Arabic and Mandarin Chinese translations were also recorded, but we couldn’t hear them in the 60 second cut above. Also, over at Language Log, a commenter notes in their post on the commercial that the translation of “above the fruited plains” into Tagalog - sa ibabaw ng mga prutas - may have been a bit faulty: it means, simply, above the fruits.
