Celebration and size of a sposalizio (wedding) in Italy depends on status, region, and background. However most weddings have a lot in common: a big, long meal with multiple courses and a huge multi-tiered cake. A church wedding is very popular, however previously divorced couples cannot get married in a church, so they would get married at the city hall. Tables and seats are carefully arranged to avoid inevitable family feuds to re-spark up. In Italy it is very very common to convivere: that is, to live together possibly with kids but not married. Some would marry after 5 or 10 years.
Here is some vocabulary:
- matrimonio (marriage)
- sposalizio (wedding) Most Italians use matrimonioas well.
- Mi sposi? (Will you marry me?)
- si’ (I do) This means yes in Italian.
