As a German speaker, when you see a good movie you would say “Das war ein guter Film” (It was a good movie). You’d say “Das war ein gutes Lied” (This was a good song) when you hear a good song and ,”Das ist ein gutes Buch” (This is a good book) when you read a good book.
But what if you want to be more descriptive about a specific event, movie or dinner? Have you ever wondered what other phrases or other adjectives you could use to your feelings?
You could try “Das Buch ist spannend” (The book is exciting) instead of just using “gut” or “schlecht.” Or what about saying “Der Film ist außergewöhnlich” (The movie is remarkable”) to describe that this movie that really impacted you.
Here is a list of phrases which you can easily use different context with examples:
- Es ist langweilig (It is boring): Immer denselben Film zu sehen ist lanweilig (To watch the same movie all the time is boring)
- Es ist kompliziert (It is complicated): Die Geschichte ist lang und kompliziert. (The story is long and complicated)
- Es war erschreckend (It was scary): Die Vorstellung dich zu verlieren ist erschreckend (The (lit.) imagination/ thought of losing you is scary.)
- Es ist interessant (It is interesting): Das Essen schmeckt interessant. (The food tastes interesting)
- Es war rührend (It was touching, moving): Seine Rede war rührend. (His speech was moving.)
- Es war erfrischend (It was refreshing): Das Wasser war erfrischend. (The water was refereshing)
- Es war erholsam (It was restorative, recreative): Der Urlaub war erholsam. (The vacation was relaxing)
- Es war farbenfreudig (It was colorful); Die Kunstaustellung war farbenfreudig (The art exhibition was colorful)
- Es war geschmackvoll (It was tasty, esthetic): Ihre Wohnung wurde geschmackvoll eingerichtet. (Her apartment was furnished tastefully)
Go ahead and focus on some adjectives once in a while. It will help you to increase your vocabulary and help yourself to express yourself better on a different level.
