Living Language Note: Over the next few months, our new friend Kathleen, aka Kat, will be taking a journey with us. She’ll be learning the challenging yet rewarding language of Chinese – and she’ll be blogging about it along the way! Check here every Monday for an update from Kat. When she’s not learning Chinese & blogging about it, Kat is a chef with Bon Appetit Management Company. She has her own blog and you can follow her on Twitter.
Hello everyone, my name is Kat and I just received my Living Language Platinum Chinese in the mail. I’m ready and excited to try it out!

I’m a chef, so you’re probably wondering why I would decide to learn Chinese? Honestly, any language could potentially help me as a chef. Cooking is one thing that every culture has.
Though learning Chinese will certainly help me in my career, I’m not learning Chinese just to read Chinese food menus and recipes. I was inspired by the TV show “Firefly” in my decision. The show depicts a future where Chinese is the universal language just by the sheer number of people who speak the language. If this makes me a super geek, then well, I admit that I am one!
I’ve taken a few other languages classes and lessons in the past: French, Latin, Russian, and Czech. I know my biggest challenges were learning new writing styles as well as pronunciations. When I was in college and deciding what language to take, I was debating between Chinese or Russian because both were very different from the romance languages I had taken in the past. I chose Russian then, so now I want to give Chinese a go. I’m someone that loves to learn and this is a great opportunity for me to do just that!
I’m looking forward to sharing this language journey with you. More to come next week!
