Yoga in Deutsch

What better way to wind down the week and kick off a relaxing holiday weekend than with yoga? And why not try a yoga class in German? Here is a sample on how a yoga class could look like in Germany:

The class could start with a phrase like “Namaste, herzlich willkommen zu unserer Yogastunde. Setzt euch bitte in den Lotussitz, um zu meditieren. Macht dabei die Augen zu und konzentriert euch auf euren Atem. Versucht durch die Nase ein-und auszuatmen. Die Hände könnt ihr an die Knie legen; die Handinnenfläche entweder nach oben oder nach untern richten.

(Namaste! Welcome to our Yoga class. Please sit in a lotus position in order to meditate. Close your eyes and focus on your breath, Try to inhale and exhale through your nose. The hands can be placed on your knees either facing up or down).

After the meditation practice, it is common in a yoga class that you will do a sun salutaion. You probably do not need instructions on how to flow through your vinyasa, but here are some usefull vocabulary, which you will hear throughout the flow:

Sonnengruß or Sonnengebet (Sun Salutaions)

  • Mountain pose: Berg
  • Downwardfacing dog: nach untenschauender Hund
  • upwardfacing dog: nach obenschauender Hund
  • little cobra or full cobra: kleine Kobra oder große Kobra
  • plank: Brett

The list could go on. If you are seriously considering to take a yoga class while you are travelling in Germany, I would also recommend to watch some of the intructional videos that you may find on youtube. In fact, you do not need to be in Germany to receive instructions for a Yoga session. Check out the following video:
