About an hour from Paris, Versailles is a sight of unparalleled grandeur and magnificence. The place is certainly overcrowded with tourists from all over the world, anytime of the year, but the sheer size and aspect of the palace almost makes it a normal scene, perhaps replaced in the modern mind’s eye by a vision of the ancient court era, brimming with life.
In this respect, Versailles actually offers some extraordinary experiences, especially in the summer time. From June to September, when balmy days and nights offer a chance to stroll leisurely around the vast grounds of the royal castle, the visitor becomes an active participant, his senses dazzled by a myriad of staged performances, fireworks, light-shows, and music resounding throughout:
Les Grandes Eaux Musicales & Nocturnes are separate events with gorgeous fountain displays in the gardens of Versailles, accompanied by Baroque music.
On the Grand Canal of Versailles, The Royal Fireworks will recreate the two famous open-air orchestral works of Handel: Water Music and the Music for the Royal Fireworks.
The Grand Costumed & Masked Ball is a one-night only event occurring on the last day of June, from midnight to dawn, in the Orangerie of the Palace of Versailles. All guests will be required to wear a mask.
