Good news for the ancient city of Pompeii, home of the world’s greatest archaeological treasures and truly a unique place. Volcanic ash from nearby Mount Vesuvius smothered the Roman city in 79 A.D., leaving it partially buried for centuries. A few days ago, the Italian government launched a 105M euro project to save it. The site had been neglected and some of the structures have collapsed, a real cultural disaster. The wonderful “House of Gladiators” (the club house for the actual gladiators, not Hollywood movie types — see images here) collapsed 18 months ago — the cultural heritage lost in that collapse was, of course, devastating. So let hope for the best.
