Tips on Learning German
  • Seval August 2011
The best way of starting to apply your knowledge in any language is by: SPEAKING SPEAKING SPEAKING!

If you do not have anyone to talk to, then start talking to yourself! Simply repeat some vocabulary (with their articles) when you watch TV, when you walk to the car or train or when you wait in line at the grocery store. If you feel awkward speaking to yourself in public locations, just pull up your cell phone and pretend you are talking to a German friend :-)

The more you speak, the better you get rid of your inhibitions and you will get used to German pronunciation.

@Seval, pretending to talk on your cell phone is a great idea. We have become so used to people around us talking on their cell phones that no one will know about your private conversation with yourself. On the other hand, walking around talking to yourself without a phone...  :-)

    Thanks for the idea.

Prima Seval! I love your idea -mir gefällt Deine Idee! What helps too - was auch hilft: reading - lesen!!

Reading German is easy as every letter is pronounced - Deutsch lesen ist einfach, weil jeder Buchstabe ausgesprochen wird. This way, your mouth gets used to producing the sounds which supports learning and eventually speaking the language - So gewöhnt sich Dein Mund daran, die Laute zu produzieren, was das Lernen und letztendlich Sprechen der Sprache unterstützt.

I just began my studies a few weeks ago.  CDs travel with me, but have taken suggestion of "speaking" on the phone.  Very helpful. Thanks
