"nomimasu" vs. "drink"

edited April 2013 in Japanese
飲みます nomimasu means “drink” in English. It sounds all simple and easy, but 飲みます nomimasu has two particular usages which its English counterpart does not have.

1.
スープを飲みます suupu o nomimasu means, “eat soup”.
In Japanese, we don’t say “eat soup”; we say “drink soup”.

2.
薬を飲みます kusuri o nomimasu means, “take medicine”.
We say “drink medicine” if the medicine is to be taken orally. So you can even say,
ピルを飲みます piru o nomimasu “take pills”.

Otherwise, the Japanese verb
飲みます nomimasu and the English verb “drink” are used pretty much the same way. In English, we sometimes say “drink” to mean “drink alcohol beverage”. We have that same usage in Japanese too!
