¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

¡Feliz año nuevo! Happy New Year!

In Spain we welcome the New Year eating 12 grapes in 12 seconds! it might sound weird or unbelivable but is a tradition to seat in front of the TV with your family and or friends and watch a clock tower bell to ring 12 times at midnight. According to the tradition to eat the 12 grapes in time brings good luck and prosperity.

Each bell ring is a one bite, one grape. I have never been able to eat mine in time but I swear everyone does.

Check out this funny video for the 12 grape tradition:

¡Feliz y próspero año 2013!

  • I first heard about this when I was taking Spanish in high school. The only problem was that I confused the words uvas and huevos. I remember trying to have an open mind, but thinking, "twelve eggs in twelve seconds?? That's just not healthy!"

I like the grape idea much better!

Think about the bright side, at least it's not 12 burgers or hotdogs
  • Ha, yes, that would be much worse than twelve eggs.

I have to confess that I used to sneak into the kitchen and switch my grapes for the smallest ones I could find. I was always impressed how my mom could eat them so fast without choking. I think I never ate them all on time.

"The twelve grapes of luck" tradition started in 1909. Some vine growers popularized the 12 grapes to better sell huge amounts of grapes from a year of overstocked harvest.

I found a really interesting article about this tradition:

In Spain there is another New Year's Eve superstition/tradition: To wear new red underwear, a bra, a sock, a garter, whatever. And — stranger yet — the undergarment should be given to you by someone else.

Feliz Año Nuevo para ti tambien. I hope the long time
away from the sessions has not messed up the little basics I had built up. I’ll
be back, and regular, pretty soon.

  • ¡Me alegro de leerte de nuevo en el Forum Mahima!

Estoy segura de que no has perdido los fundamentos de Español aprendidos, ahora simplemente hace falta ponerlo en práctica de nuevo con una nueva sesión de eTutoring.

I have a New Year's resolution to learn French.  Yo voy a intentar aprender Francés con Living Language. I already started lesson 1. So now I am on both sides, student and eTutor!

  • Si tu parles espagnol avec moi, je parlerai le francais avec toi. :)

Question: that video showed them eating the grapes about once every 3 seconds.  Did I miss something?

    Bonne année Roe!

Each grape is eaten with each beat of the bell, one per second I believe. A little of strugge worth for those who believe that brings good luck and prosperity.

A little kid is yelling in background "que asco" (disgusting) and "me ahogo" (I am choking) ahaha
