Some facts about Japanese names:

  • A married couple must share the same last name. No hyphenated last name is allowed.
  • When a Japanese person writes his/her full name in Japanese characters, it's always the last-first order. e.g. 山田真理子 (Yamada Mariko)

  • Foreign names, which are written in katakana, are always written in the first-last order. e.g. メアリー スミス (Mearii Sumisu) - Mary Smith
  • The most common Japanese last names are: 佐藤(Sato), 鈴木(Suzuki), 高橋(Takahashi), 田中(Tanaka).
