Back-channeling in Italian
  • mmr715 April 2012
When my eTutor is speaking, I find myself rotating through only a few expressions to show my reactions: "Si." "Vero?" "Bene!" "Esatto!"

Even worse, I sometimes use English expressions such as "uh huh" and "okay".

I'd love to learn more back-channeling expressions to appear like a native!

The ones you listed are the most popular and used one, so as long as you "master" them, you are more than fine. Another useful one is "Davvero?", which is roughly: "really?". Also "Cosa?" (what?) is another. Certo! (sure!).  In any case, back-channelling may vary somewhat from one region to another.

Grazie Massimo. I'll try and see if I can "master" them!

Bene. I am sure you will. Do not forget to sign up to the eTutoring sessions.

"Capisco" (lit. I understand); "Va bene" (it is fine) are also useful.
