Lesson 3:
Grammar
Questions
Asking yes/no questions is very easy in Polish. The simplest way to do that is to change the intonation of the sentence (which is indicated in writing with a question mark). Compare the following:
Jesteś studentem.
You are a student
Jesteś studentem?
Are you a student?
Additionally, you may put the question word czy in front of a yes/no question, which makes it sound somewhat more formal.
Czy jesteś studentem?
Are you a student?
In questions that require a specific answer, you typically use question words such as the following:
| Polish | English | Example |
| co | what |
Co masz w portfelu? What do you have in your wallet? |
| gdzie | where |
Gdzie mieszkasz? Where do you live? |
| jak | how |
Jak się nazywasz? What’s your name? (lit., How do you call yourself?) |
| jaki | what (kind of) |
Jaki masz samochód? What kind of car do you have? (Note that jaki agrees with the noun that it refers to in gender, case, and number, similarly to adjectives.) |
| kiedy | when |
Kiedy są twoje imieniny? When is your name day? |
| kto | who |
Kto lubi Joannę? Who likes Joanna? |
