Russian to be
Notice that the sentence I’m an American has only two words in Russian. This is because Russian doesn’t have articles (a, an, or the) and doesn’t normally use the verb to be in the present tense. So the sentence Я америка́нец is grammatically correct although it literally translates as I American; Я Джон is equivalent to the English I’m John.
