Proficiency Scales and the Courses
-
I see that the regular courses are broken down into three categories: essential, intermediate, and advanced. Were the courses constructed based on the ACTFL, ILR, and/or CEFR proficiency scales?

Hi Grace! Our levels aren't developed with specific proficiency scales in mind within the course itself. Overall, the level of proficiency you will reach in self-study depends on a many factors, but in terms of the CEFR, our courses generally prepare you to pass the B1-B2 proficiency levels.Hope this helps!

Hi Suzanne,
Thanks for your reply. One follow up question. Would it be possible to describe the CEFR B1-B2 levels in term of (American) college semesters? For example, are they approximately two, three, four, etc semesters of language study? I am just trying to figure out where I am before signing up for any proficiency test. Thanks again!

Hi Grace! As Suzanne said, our courses have not been systematically compared to any college course or other standardized test of language proficiency, so this is not something we can really speak to with certainty. College courses can also vary in content and speed, so I think the best way for you to gauge where you are on the CEFR is to use their self-assessment grid:http://www.langcen.cam.ac.uk/lc/culp/CEF_sa_grid.pdfThis should give you a good indication of your CEFR level. Then I would contact your language department at your college to inquire about the equivalent in terms of their program if you need that information as well.Hope this helps!Best,
