Какой или Который?
  • Andy086 January 15

    Здравствуйте Господа,

Меня зовут Энди.  Я учусь русский язык.

My question is about when to use the question word Какой and when to use Который?  Both words translate to which in English.

    Спасибо Наташа!

    Здравствуй, Энди!

    Очень хороший вопрос - спасибо!

    1. Который, -ая, -ое, -ые (pronoun) is used when meaning: which, that, who

Который is used when there is a specific set of objects, and you want to choose one: which one exactly among a few; which one in a row/order. It is also used as a connective word between clauses or connecting a subordinate sentence.
Same declension rules apply as to any adjective, i.e. the word который (masc., sing., Nom. case) changes its ending depending on gender, number, and cases.

Который сейчас час? - What time is it? (lit: Which hour is it now?)
Вот книга, которую я люблю читать. - Here is the book that I like (love) to read.

More info can be found here.

    2. Какой, -ая, -ое, -ые (a question pronoun) is used when meaning: what, which, what sort of, how

Similarly, the same declension rules apply as to который = adjective (see above).
Used when asking about a quality, what specific color you like for instance. Basically какой in many cases can be used instead of который, but который always means that there is a set of possible options, while answering on какой you may talk about imaginary things or about options that are currently not present. More info here.

Какое сегодня число? - What is the date today?
Какая большая рыба! - What a big fish!

More info can be found here.
