Names in Japanese?

    I have a few questions to ask. 

    -How come names are said differently in Japanese?
    -How exactly do you translate the name to be said in Japanese?

    For example, Smith is pronounced Sumisu in Japanese. How is that translated into Japanese and why?

    Japanese does not have a Th or Sm sound, so Smith is translated to Sumisu.
