three takes
  • goospanish July 2014
    tomar
    usar
    coger.

I think maybe  tomar is for food or drink
and  usar  for  size of things... shoes, dresses, belts
    coger

.....  --- no idea up  pattern  34     American Heritage   a grab, grasp                    () gather up                       () capture                          () take up                            (absorber)to absorbI now think the spanish verb is followed by meaning

    Sorprender        to catch by surprise
    encontrar        to find
    enfermendad        to catch
    entender        to understand
    recoger                to gather up
    apresar            to capture
    ocupar            to take up

    absorber        to absorb
    apresar            to capture
    alcanzar        to catch up with

I love words.... is the second list better...   absorber seems like it would me absorb

    Hola, goospanish:

This are two very nice lists of words. Do you have a specific question?
There´s a lot to say about COGER.
We use it all the time in Spain, meaning to take, to catch.., but it has a sexual meaning in Mexico and Argentina. So, be careful!

    Saludos,

    Carmen.

    Hola,

In Spain we don´t use TOMAR as much as in Latin America. Take a look:

    LATIN AMERICA / SPAIN

tomar el tren, un taxi... / coger el tren...
tomar (to drink alcohol) / beber
    tomar fotos / hacer fotos
tomar un examen / hacer un examen

USAR is used meaning TO USE:

¿Puedo usar tu coche?: Can I use your car?
¡¿Quién ha usado el ipad?!: Who has used the ipad?!

    Saludos,

    Carmen.

In the lesson they use   usar like  this
    I take a size medium.l

what size do you take.   ok this could be use

    Que talla  usa?

Uso la talla mediana.      So I use a  medium  would also work.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hola, Goospanish:

I wouldn´t translate I TAKE A SIZE MEDIUM as USO LA TALLA MEDIANA, but who knows!
For me it could mean ME LLEVO LA TALLA MEDIANA: I´m taking with me/I´m buying a size medium.

WHAT SIZE DO YOU USE? is ¿QUÉ TALLA USA/LLEVA?

    Saludos,

    Carmen.

That is what our book does.  (living Lang  essentials) ...  That is what I like about language... all kinds of different
ways to talk about things.   In the course  I'm taking at U of Salamancia  the have
unit on buying clothes.   I will see what they use.

lol  I just go to rack and pick  hold up... they figure it out.  But I want to  talk.  I need to spend time on that too!

    Saludos,
    Goo
