How long????

    I know it depends.

I have just started the Complete German course.  CD's, books.  How should I structure the course work and how long should I spend on each lesson before moving on?

Currently, I listen to the CD for 1 to 2 hours (back and fourth to work over a couple of days) then do some reading and testing in the books and then some on line quizzes.  Definately not mastered at this time but feel as though I can move on.  Are there general guidelines?  Should I move on quicker or slower?

    Hi Luke,
I won't just tell you it depends, but truly it depends. :) There are a few tips I can share though. I would suggest that you first spend an hour looking at the vocabulary sections and reading the grammar sections and then on your commute listen to the pronunciation of the vocabulary words, and the new words and example sentences from the grammar sections on the CD for about an hour, maybe less depending on the length of the lesson.  Afterwards, while not commuting, of course, I would complete the practice activities after the vocabulary and grammar sections and then at the end of the lesson, I would listen to the conversation at least 3 times before doing the practice activity that comes after.  All of this will probably take you about 3 hours, I imagine, depending on how much you need to study the vocabulary and grammar sections before moving on to the practice sections. If you don't have a 3 hour block free in your schedule, that's no problem! In our experience, we've seen the best results with students who spend a half hour to an hour on their LL course a few times a week, rather than just one long study session once a week. Frequency of exposure is key.  If you complete a lesson per week, you'll finish the entire Complete Course in 46 weeks so a little less than a year. Students who have a goal to complete the course more quickly (for an upcoming trip, for example) have also been able to complete the course in a shorter time period, of course. It all depends on how much time you can spend per week, but I would say 1 to 2 lessons per week is a good pace if you don't have to finish by a certain date.
I hope this helps! Also, don't hesitate to post questions here for our eTutors to answer if you have them!
    Best,
