Testing your Spelling using the flashcards in English mode
-
I found that putting the flashcards on shuffle and in ENGLISH (so they display English first and your foreign language after being flipped over) are very helpful for spelling study. I see the English version of the word (I'm taking German) and then I write the German equivalent. I flip the flashcard over and check the spelling and capitalization against the flash card. Then I play it to hear it spoken and repeat for extra reinforcement.

That's a great idea, thanks for sharing that, Dawn. My own preference is:1. Go through the deck with the target language (one I'm learning) shown first. Flip and keep going through the deck that way until I can remember the English meaning of every new word.2. Flip the deck to English displayed first, and go through a few times until I can remember the target language for each English. (I like your addition of writing things down. We're also looking into adding functionality where you can input on the card, but I don't have a firm timeline on that yet.)3. Only start moving things into the MASTERED deck when I'm really fast with the target language.4. After getting down to a core of maybe five or six words that just don't want to stick, go back to Target first, and repeat until it all sticks, at least for the short term...Does anyone have any tips on making things stick for the long term? We've got some mechanisms built into the courses, but is there anything else that anyone does? Please share.

Oh, I like the input on the card idea! I also practice spelling with an app that shows the word quickly and makes me spell it after. I hope the input functionality or other spelling practice method gets implemented!

There are also free apps and inexpensive apps on ipad for spelling tests (I'm sure there must be some for other platforms as well). Most of them have you make a list by recording the word and entering the spelling. Then, during the test, the word is played to you and you must spell it. That might be a helpful study method for some.... or perhaps a future feature for the Living Language site since the audio for the vocabulary already exists. =) HINT.

Ha ha... thanks for the HINT! We are looking at ways of adding some game/review modules to the existing courses. The queue for our poor developers is becoming a bit crushing, but this is something we've been looking at.

Oh, I have one more thought. Sometimes there are flashcards for nouns without the article listed. It would be nice to always have the article on the flashcard because it is so important to know it -- even if it isn't said when you hit the play button.

Very good suggestion.
