Essential Spanish lesson 10: me, te, ?
  • Carrie March 8
Under Grammar Builder 1 we are taught how to say likes and dislikes such as "me gusta" and "te gusta."  The "te" is for the pronoun "tu", right?  What would you use for "usted?"
  • Hi, Carrie. Yes, te is the indirect object pronoun for , used in this construction. The one corresponding to usted is le.

If you want to see the whole list of pronouns, check out the grammar summary, and look under "Pronouns" (Part 7). The relevant column is indirect object: me, te, le in the singular, and nos, os, les in the plural.

You'll come back to the direct and indirect object pronouns in Intermediate, which you're really close to!

    Hello Carrie!

Here you will find an old blog post about "gustar"

If you want to complete the exercise proposed I will be more than happy to review it for you.

    Anna,

Gracias.  Here is my attempt at the exercises:

    I like Spanish
    Yo
    Me
    Espagnol
    Gusta
    Me gusta Espagnol.

    I like you
    Yo
    Me
    Tu
    Gustas
    Me gustas tu.

    I like Pedro
    Yo
    Me
    Pedro
    Gusta
    Me gusta Pedro.

    You like Pedro
    Tu
    Te
    Pedro
    Gusta
    Te gusta Pedro.

    You like Spanish
    Tu
    Te
    Espagnol
    Gusta
    Te gusta Espagnol.

    How is that?
  • I'll let Anna give you the official feedback, but I think I spy some French in there: espagnol! (I do that all the time, Carrie. My fingers are used to going for the g and the n.)

Anna, is there a difference between tú me gustas and me gustas tú? If they're both grammatical, is there a difference in what they convey or which situations they're used in? (One neutral, one stressing 'you're the one that I like, as opposed to someone else..." These are usually the types of things conveyed by intonation and moving subjects or objects around.)

    Christopher,

You got me, I do speak French.  I've really got to look out for that.  If I'm going to learn Spanish I really need to know what the word is for it.

    Carrie
  • This is why we need a "like" button on our forum. Honestly, I rarely type español correctly the first time. It usually comes out espagnol. And una comes out une a little too often, as well.

Now that's what I call Bonus.
I paid for Spanish, and here I'm learning French as well ;)
A "like" button would be "liked" :)

    Hola Mahima!!

I also see your French influence in your answers. All the asnwers are correct, and you conjugated gustar correctly and used the right pronouns. Only one hint: in front of Español we use the article el.

    Me gusta el Español
    Me gustas tú.
    Me gusta Pedro.
    You like Pedro
    Te gusta Pedro.
    Te gusta el Español.
