Question on Lesson 6 flashcard in Essential Spanish
  • Carrie January 9
I'm doing the flashcards for lesson 6 in Essential Spanish and question one of them.  It says "Cuantos idiomas hablas en el trabajo?"  I thought "idioma" is feminine.  If that's the case, shouldn't it be "cuantas"?
  • You're thinking along the right lines, but idioma is actually masculine. There are a lot of nouns in Spanish that break the o=masculine and a=feminine rule, usually ones that are borrowed from Greek in the case of masculine nouns ending in -a, or shortened forms in the case of feminine nouns ending in -o:

    el problema (the problem)
    el sistema (the system)
    el programa (the program)
    el clima (the climate)
    el idioma (the language)

    la testigo (female witness)
    la radio (radio)
    la foto (photo, from fotografia)
    la moto (motorcycle, from motocicleta)

Since idioma is masculine, cuantos idiomas is correct.

Thank you for the response.  But there is another flashcard that says una idioma.  Should that be un idioma?
  • Yes, it should be un idioma! Thanks for noticing that. We'll have to update the content. (The audio just says "idioma," so that's of course fine.)

    Sorry for the confusion.

    Muchas gracias.

Muchos gracias.  Non problema.  La testigo esta en la moto.  (Why the witness is on the motorcycle, I don't know, but gotta practice the new words haha!)

Common feminine words ending in -e include la calle, la clase, la frase, la gente, la llave, la mente, la nave, la nieve, la noche, la parte, la serie.

EXCEPTIONS: ALMA, AGUA, AULA, ARTE, AVE, etc.

There is a group of words that are feminine but that take the masculine articles (el, un) in the singular because they begin with a stressed a. Common words in this group include agua (el agua but las aguas, agua fría), águila (el águila, las águilas), aula(el aula, las aulas), ave (el ave, las aves), alma (el alma, las almas), hada (el hada, las hadas)
