Holiday Greetings in Japanese
  • Sakura December 2012
Many of the holiday greetings you say and hear in the U.S. don’t have real Japanese translations. You guess it right - we use katakana! So just use your best Japanese pronunciation! (^-^)

    • Merry Christmas! メリークリスマス merii kurisumasu
    • Happy Hanukah! ハッピーハヌカ happii hanuka
    • Happy Kwanzaa! ハッピークワンザ happii kuwanza

However, since New Year’s Day is a very important Japanese holiday, we do have a Japanese phrase for “Happy New Year”.

    • Happy New Year! 明けましておめでとうございます。 Akemasjite omedetoo gozaimasu.
