Asking someone's name

How do you say "Cual es tu nombre" in a formal manner?

    ¡Hola Traveler!

The best way to ask someone's name in a formal manner is to change the possessive article from "tu" to "su".

    "Tu" means "your" (informal)
    "Su" means "your" (formal)

    ¿Cuál es tu nombre? (informal)
    ¿Cuál es su nombre? (formal)

Many times we will use the pronouns tú and usted (both meaning "you") differently if we want to be more or less formal.

Please see this old post on when and how to use tú (you informal) and usted (you formal).

I hope you find it useful!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Thank you THoth!

    - ¿Cómo se llama usted?
    - ¿Cuál es su nombre?

Both sentences mean "What's your name?" (formal)
