lack of definite articles in the vocab drills
  • mha April 2012
A major drawback of the Living Language program is the lack of definite articles in the vocabulary drills. I know for most nouns you can guess the gender.  But for the others, you need that 'la' or 'el'.  Also as a learning tool, they need to be drilled together.

    Dear MHA,
Thanks a lot for sharing your feedback on the LL course.  Hopefully, we can address your concern and use this as an opportunity to improve the course.  Before we do though, I want to make sure I understand your comment. Could you tell me which platform (books, online course, or apps?) and what level you are referring to? I believe you are referring to the flashcards that are part of our online course.  Are you in Essential Spanish? I do see that while the majority of nouns are presented with a definite or indefinite article, e.g. la madre, una persona, there are a few cases in which the article is omitted, e.g. agua, manzana.  Is this what you are referring to? Your comment that in most but not all cases, one can tell the gender of the noun by its ending is correct, and so, you are right to say that having the article present is helpful.  All vocabulary items are presented with their gender in the book glossary, but it would be helpful for new nouns to be presented everywhere with a clear indication of their gender.  If this is the content you are referring to, please confirm and we can make those changes in the online course.
    Gracias!
