LEARN DOTHRAKI, FICTIONAL LANGUAGE FROM GAME OF THRONES®, WITH LIVING LANGUAGE AND HBO GLOBAL LICENSING®

Beginner course features lessons from Dothraki language creator David J. Peterson

NEW YORK, NY (JUNE 2, 2014)—Learning a new language has always been the gateway into experiencing a culture, and now fans can dive in to the world of Game of Thrones like never before with Living Language Dothraki: A Conversational Language Course Based on the Hit Original HBO Series Game of Thrones (on sale October 7, 2014).

As the popularity of the television series, based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling A Song of Ice and Fire books, has skyrocketed, fans have eagerly looked for any and all information on the Dothraki characters and culture—creating their own online communities to catalogue Dothraki dialogue, vocabulary, and grammar from show scripts, along with their own instructional language videos on YouTube. There are already nearly 150 self-identified Dothraki speakers on the popular “Tongues of Ice and Fire” Wiki.

Now, for the first time, viewers and readers have access to an official guide to Dothraki compiled by acclaimed language and culture consultant David J. Peterson. With more than 500 words and phrases, and including never-before-heard material and words coined exclusively for the Living Language Dothraki course, fans will have the chance to master the language and join Daenerys on her march toward King’s Landing to reclaim the Iron Throne.

Like a traditional language course, users will learn vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and even cultural notes, which lay out context as well as dos and don’ts. For example, since horses are so central to Dothraki culture, many phrases have their roots in the equestrian. Whatever you do, never call a Dothraki warrior an ifak (walker): the ultimate insult since it implies he can no longer ride his horse.

Peterson narrates the course’s lessons and dialogues, giving fans the opportunity to learn Dothraki straight from the source.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Living Language to produce the first official Dothraki text,” says Peterson. “This book will take you from arakh to zhavvorsa in no time, and the audio samples will help you perfect your pronunciation. I often get the question, ‘When will there be a Dothraki guide I can buy?’ The answer is now, thanks to Living Language. Me nem nesa!”

The course, Living Language’s first for a created language, is available in three editions:

  • Living Language Dothraki ($19.99), which includes a language guide and audio CD featuring 200 words and phrases, available at the HBO Shop (store.hbo.com) and at physical and online retailers worldwide
  • Living Language Dothraki Expanded Online Course ($30.00), covering additional vocabulary and grammar including 500 words and phrases, plus interactive quizzes and games, available at www.livinglanguage.com
  • Living Language Dothraki Companion Mobile App ($3.99), featuring 15 thematic flash card decks, available on the App Store℠ for iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch®

CONNECT TO YOUR HERITAGE WITH NEW IRISH AND HEBREW COURSES FROM LIVING LANGUAGE

New York, NY (April 24, 2014)—For those looking to reconnect with their heritage through their mother tongue, Living Language presents two courses based on thousands of years of tradition: LIVING LANGUAGE HEBREW and LIVING LANGUAGE IRISH. Though both were previously on the verge of extinction as spoken languages, they are now vital links between the past and present.

Both Hebrew and Irish come from ancient cultures of legends, poetry, music, folklore, and religious study. After becoming virtually obsolete in everyday use, Hebrew was revived as a modern language and now has an estimated 9 million speakers worldwide, a number that continues to grow. Today, one in four Irish citizens say they have some knowledge of Irish, and a burgeoning international community are exploring their origins while becoming Gaeilgeoirí (Irish speakers).

When discovering one’s roots, knowledge of Irish or Hebrew can help decode original documents, records, and even surnames, as well as connect travelers journeying to their homelands with fellow speakers. Alongside the lessons, Living Language’s courses include culture notes to provide context on everything from ordering at an Israeli restaurant to Irish curses and blessings.

Living Language encourages flexibility and engagement with learning materials over multiple platforms, so users have options in choosing the courses and formats that are right for them. Irish and Hebrew courses are available in a variety of formats and levels, including:

Living Language online courses ($150 per year)—The digital edition of the beginner through advanced course offers interactive content including games, puzzles, progress quizzes, an online community of language learners, and access to e-tutoring sessions.
Living Language mobile apps ($9.99 for full course on iPhone or iPad, or $3.99 per level)—The mobile edition of the course mirrors the full beginner through advanced lessons of the online course, optimized for practicing at home or on the go.
Essential Edition ($22.95)—Living Language’s basics course teaches everything necessary to build a solid base. This course includes 1 workbook covering 10 lessons at a beginner level, 3 audio CDs, and free online study tools in the Language Lab on LivingLanguage.com, which include flashcards and quizzes to accompany each lesson.
Complete Edition ($49.95)—The Complete course covers beginner through advanced vocabulary, grammar, and conversation in a more traditional learning format. The course includes 3 workbooks covering 46 lessons, 9 audio CDs, and free online study tools in the Language Lab on LivingLanguage.com, which include flashcards and quizzes to accompany each lesson.

Online learning options let users access exclusive interactive content, like games and quizzes to aid with retention and recall of a language. Living Language’s online courses also include access to community forums, where students can pose questions and connect with other students, and personal e-tutoring sessions, where a native speaker offers additional practice, feedback, advice, and encouragement to assist them on their linguistic journey.

Learning a new language is a step-by-step process—students progress from mastering single words to composing full sentences and constructing conversations. The Living Language Method™, based on courses developed for the US State Department’s overseas diplomats, uses a four point approach that provides all the tools necessary to become fluent: Building a Foundation, Progressing with Confidence, Retaining What You’ve Learned, and Achieving Your Goals.

In addition to Hebrew and Irish, Living Language’s courses are available in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Hindi, Arabic, Greek, Korean, and Russian, as well as English for speakers of Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish.
