This promises to be a great way to talk about German culture. I'm one of the eTutors, and would like to follow Christopher's suggestions right away.  Here is my current favorite German movie:  Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others). It tells the story of an East German secret service agent who gets more and more involved in the lives of those he is supposed to watch over. It's funny and serious and compassionate. Check it out if you have a chance, and then tell us: What do you think - Ist der Film gut?

Guten Tag! My name is Heike, and I'm one of the German tutors here at Living Language. I'm from Munich, Germany's capital not only of beer but of fairytale castles and beautiful lakes. I've been teaching German for 20 years and look forward to helping you practice your new language. Aside from teaching German I also do German voice overs and have recorded several German language courses for Living Language. A new language is a new life - so come aboard and experience the joy of speaking German!

Danke, Helga und Heike! (Und Helga, ja, das ist ein sehr guter Film!) That's a great film suggestion.
  • Seval August 2011

My name is Seval and I am from Cologne. I studied Linguistics at the University in Cologne and I have been living in New York for 3 years. I am in the etutor team and I am looking forward to hear more from you.

Today I would like to start with a quote from a very famous man from Germany: Albert Einstein

“Imagination is way more important than Knowledge because Knowledge is limited.”

Therefore let’s all use our imagination when we learn a new language :-)

My name is Dave. I am from Illinois. I spent 3 years in Dexheim, Germany as a soldier in the late 80s. I had the privilige of being in Germany for a Soccer World Cup Championship win and, more importantly, the tearing down of the Berlin wall. It was a great time to be there and I have been planning a return for many years. (Re)learning German and expanding my knowledge of the country and its culture will be a great step in that direction. I am looking forward to this journey with all of you.

Do you know when the tutoring sessions will be starting?

  • Christopher August 2011
@trektech/Dave. Thanks for the introduction. Angenehm! We're making a few final adjustments to the eTutoring application, and we thought we'd give people a bit of time to brush up. You should be able to schedule your sessions for next week. We've got great tutors who are looking forward to beginning. It's good to see that we've got students who are ready to start, too. Thanks!

Guten Tag.  Ich heisse Grace.  Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch.  I actually have the Ultimate German books, which are the predecessors of the current series.  The books are very good, but I also need some interaction (speaking with others, games).  So I signed up for the online course.  Looking forward to learning German with all of you!
  • Heike March 2012
Herzlich Willkommen, Grace!! Ich hoffe, Dich bald im Online Kurs zu sehen! Der Online Kurs ist SUPER!! Da lernt man viel :-) Lass mich wissen, wenn Du eine Frage hast ... (let me know when you have a question).

    Tschüß!!

    Heike.
  • Guten Tag. Ich heisse Monica. Ich lerne Deutsch. I have the platinum series, which I like. So far the hardest for me is learning the cases; ie, nominative, accusitave and so forth. Sometimes the CD goes too fast for me to comprehend, so any guidance you can give is appreciated.
  • Hi again, Ladybourbon. Are you listening to the audio while reading along in the book? That will help tremendously. It will be challenging at first, but honestly, it will come. Be patient with yourself, but also give the appropriate amount of time and repetition to each content chunk (vocab list, grammar note, etc.)

I gave a few examples of how I use Platinum myself. It's just a suggestion, but I think it's the best way to get the most out of the course. That was posted here:

    http://livinglanguage.com/community/discussion/321/nothing-wrong-with-a-little-review-or-dont-be-that-person#Item_9

For cases (German has four: Nominative, Accusative, Dative, Genitive), that will mostly come with practice as well, but we have echoes of a case system in English, especially on pronouns:

He is a teacher. (Nominative, most subjects)
I see him. (Accusative, direct object)

German's trickier, because there are more cases, and they show up in more complicated ways, but the principle is the same. You should go through the "Drive It Home" exercises in the book. They're designed for exactly this sort of point. For example, take a bunch of masculine nouns, and simply write and say aloud:

Der ____ ist hier. (The ____ is here, nominative.)
Ich sehe den _____. (I see the ____, accusative.)

Try it with der Mann, der Lehrer, der Tisch, der Onkel... You want to establish a pattern in your mind with these grammar points, and the Drive It Homes are designed to help with that.
