Just curious as to what, if any, Japanese music anyone is listening to.  I'm currently listening to Asian Kung-fu Generation.  These guys rock. I've got most of their albums and so far there isn't a bad one. I also like The Pillows, Scandal, and Stereopony just to name a couple more. You can check out most of this stuff on youtube.

  • I started off really liking Pizzicato 5 in the mid '90s. They made great pop records appropriate for fashion shows and cocktail parties. Later I started to love club DJ Tomoyuki Tanaka and his amazing work as Fantastic Plastic Machine! Here are some fun tracks to check out!

  • I like Denki Groove. They make seriously excellent techno music but they are also very humorous. They're almost like comedians...
  • Sweet I'll be sure and check out all three. Just a couple of more bands to check out if you like rock are High and Mighty Color and Over Arm Throw. The first is a little heavier, but they switch from a female to a male throughout most songs which adds a little something extra. The second is more punk/ska type stuff. Oh and Youha's "Houki Boshi" is a little poppy for me but I can't get enough of it. It's a guilty pleasure.
  • Wow, I'd forgotten about Pizzicato 5. Great music. The other one that came to mind is Shonen Knife, but they sang in (heavily accented) English and I think were maybe a bit earlier than Pizzicato 5. Cibo Matto was similar, and also from the mid nineties.
  • Actually, one of my favorite bands is a Japanses punk band called Peelander Z. They sing mostly in English, but they are hilarious and awesome and one of the best live shows I've ever been too.  This song cracks me up:

    Hi there!

My favorite Japanese band is "Les Rallizes Denudes" (裸のラリーズ, Hadaka no Rallizes
No idea of what does it mean!

Oh i wish I could understand the lyrics and sing along...

    He is so awesome.
  • I have been listening to a lot of Ellegarden. The thing about liking Ellegarden is they don't make music together anymore so no new stuff.
  • I've been listening to One Ok Rock and My First Story a lot lately. Both excellent bands and the two lead singers of the bands just so happen to be brothers.
  • Oh yea, I got became a big fan of one ok rock too!! I also am a big fan of Asian Kung Fu Generation, Maxium the Hormone is another one thats great too!!
  • I've never heard of Maxium the Horrmone, but I'll check them out. I'm a huge fan of Asian Kung Fu Generation.
  • My favorite Japanese artist is Nujabes.  Listening to his instrumental works is such great background music for studying and relaxing!  The only lyrics in his works that I've heard are in English, and provided by (usually American) hip hop artists.
  • I'm digging up this old post! I got interested in learning Japanese because of music! I think it started with the UK band Kero Kero Bonito:

I'm into Perfume, KPP, 80's idol music (or new music that sounds old like Satellite Young), idol rap like Halcali, Lyrical School and Chelmico, 水曜日のカンパネラ, pretty much anything Maltine Records and Trekkie Trax put out, rappers like Kohh, hyper idol stuff like BPM15Q (or anything produced by Yunomi), tomggg, Her Ghost Friend, KiWi, Qrion, and ton more.

Hi EwanStrauss-san! Thank you so much for your contribution! '80s idol music is so なつかしい to me, because that's the kind of music playing everywhere when I was a kid in Japan! I was born in 1975 :)  I remember singing Seiko Matsuda all the time!
